5 Most beautiful squares in Tuscany

1 -Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa

 

The Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy and for more than 25 years it has been considered a World Heritage Site and protected by UNESCO,

The real name is Piazza del Duomo but the title of ‘ Piazza dei Miracoli’ it has been nominated from some verses of the poet and writer Gabriele d’Annunzio, and it become famous quickly because of the beauty of the place!

Today, on this beuatiful green lawn there are 4 of the most beuatiful monuments of medieval art, so particular as to have given rise to a completely original new style, called ‘ Pisan Romanesque’.

In  addition to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, inside the Piazza dei Miracoli there are the Baptistery, the Cathedral and the Camposanto, each with a specific meaning.

2 -Piazza Signoria, Florence

 

The Piazza della Signoria has been the political and social heart of Florence for many years.

There have been several parlamentos, public gatherings, and it is a well-known place, where you as a tourist can simply stroll around and enjoy all the beautiful things that are in the square.

In the Piazza della Signoria you will find the well-known loggia with statues that recall important events in the city and important myths.

You will also find the Fountain of Neptune, the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio,  the replica of David, the famous bronze equestrian statue.

3 -Piazza del Campo, Siena

 

Piazza del Campo, or simply the Campo, is Siena’s main square. With its unique shell shape and architectural integrity, it’s considered one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares

and has become the symbol of this Tuscan city.

It is still the center of the city’s public and civic life. From the piazza, 11 narrow streets radiate into the city.

The pavement was divided into nine segments to celebrate the Nine.

The current architectural shape of the Piazza del Campo is due to ongoing structural changes related to laws enacted over the years that have shaped over time spaces,

facades and monuments.

The Public Palace now is residence of the council of Siena and the Civic Museum, the latter real cultural heritage of the city as it contains works of art of inestimable value.

The three floors of the Public Palace are adorned with pointed arches typical Sienese architectural while the center is a rosette copper depicting Christ.

4 – Piazza Anfiteatro , Lucca

 

Surrounded by pastel-coloured buildings, flowers in every window and welcoming shops, this square has a wonderful and authentic Italian feel.

Its tranquil atmosphere is one of the highlights of a visit to Lucca. You enter Piazza Anfiteatro by walking through a picturesque arch. And the effect is so impressive it feels like

you are going through a portal into another world. It’s a wide open space lined with cafes and bars, inviting restaurants and small boutique shops.

5- Piazza della Cisterna, San Gimignano

Piazza della Cisterna (Cistern Square) is a piazza in San Gimignano, in the Tuscan region of Italy.

It is triangular is shape and has a natural incline to it. Connected to the town’s largest square, Piazza del Duomo through an open passage,

this piazza is entirely paved with brick and is surrounded on all sides by houses and towers from the Medieval Era.

San Gimignano has also been awarded UNESCO world heritage status to protect the ancient buildings and teach about their immense history.

This is just one of the reasons why San Gimignano is one of the most famous villages in Tuscany !
